Cyber Crime is an unlawful act where the computer is used as a tool or target or both. These days Cyber Crime is a fast-growing area of crime. Apart from other countries in India also the rate of incidence of cyber crime isincreasing day by day. Main focus in this article is what cyber crime is, how it is increasing, types of cyber crime, cyber laws, and what all measures are taken by the government to curb it etc. As, the technology is advancing man is becoming dependent on internet for all his needs as it gives easy access to do shopping, gaming, online studying, social networking, online jobs etc. everything at one place. Apart from other countries, India is also not far where the rate of incidence of cyber crime is increasing day by day.

Cyber Crimes, in India are registered under three main heads, The IT Act, The IPC (Indian Penal Code) and State Level Legislations (SLL).Criminals are mostly exploiting the speed, convenience and anonymity of the internet, commit various criminal activities and pose real threat to victims all over the world. These crimes can be phishing, Fraud due to credit card, debit card, bank robbery, illegal downloading, child pornography, distribution of viruses etc.

Do you know that over the last ten years Cyber Crime rose 19 times and Cyber crime arrests are nine times in India according to NCRB data? After, U.S.A and China, India ranked third in Malicious Activity. Also, Internet Subscribers in India crossed 400 million marks and 462 million by June 2016.

  • Cyber Stalking is threatening behaviour or repeated actions of harassment of the cyber criminals by using internet services.
  • Web Hijacking as the name suggest it is controlling others website forcefully. Due to this he/she will lose control on his/her website and content.
  • Virus attacks infect other programs, multiply it and spread it to other programm, Worms are those programs which multiply like virus from computer to computer. These are malicious software which attaches with other software like worms, virus, Trojan Horse, time bomb ect.
  • Phishing is an act of sending an email falsely to gather private information as an identity theft and ask to give personal information like password, credit card, social security etc.
  • Salami attacks are done for financial crimes. like, if employee of bank inserts a program to deduct Rs 4 from each account every month but account holder mostly not notice it and the employee makes sizable amount every month.
  • Piracy of software is illegal copying of genuine programs like copy infringement, trademarks violation, computer source code theft ect.
  • Online Gambling in this case hawala transactions, money laundering ect are reported.
  • Email spoofing is the email appears to originate from one source but actally has been sent from another source and may cause monetary damage.
  • Cyber Terrorism attacks on military installations, power plants, air traffic control etc.
  • E-Commerce or investments Frauds is an offering that uses false claims to solicit loans or investments that provides for purchase, counterfelt securities etc.
  • Cyber Defamation is when a person sends emails containing defamatory information to all of that person's friends.

Cyber defamation is most common amongst school students. Without thinking about the consequences the students use other pictures and use them for fun sake.

The consequences can be as fatal as from anxiety and depression to suicidal attempts and may cause serious life-long problems . As the preventive measure there should be adhaar card linked to each social account just like mobile number so that, no one can make fake account and use it to harm anyone.
