With every passing generation change keep popping up in every arena; be it in the professional world or the educational world. What is our take as leaders or educators? – it’s just to match our pace of change with the BIG CHANGE! Technology being a trend-changer has brought about gargantuan changes in the education world as well. As educators and students have begun to appreciate their teaching and learning experience through technology, it is pertinent to give precise thought for creating spaces for its evolution.
“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”- Barak Obama.
If we go for a throwback; our childhood perception about an igloo or a Hanging Tower of Pisa was restricted to the photographs provided in the books. But with technology, now we can go virtually scampering for a virtual tour and give a real-time experience to our students even without visiting them. Such is the mystic touch of technology!! Educators are keen to replace the old teaching model of standardized, rote-learning with more self-directed and collaborative learning pattern. With teaching aids like laptops and tablets at the disposal of the students, the ease of learning, interacting and working in the classroom with peers have increased manifolds. A Class Notebook created on the OneNote smoothly replaces a normal notebook, while at the same time giving enough provision for the teachers and students to work in collaboration and create the lesson content in unison.
A decade back playing computer games was considered a sheer waste of time for a child; but today, tech-gaming tool like Minecraft Education Edition has the potential to build up concepts, instilling team spirit, creativity and innovation in the students; which cannot be undermined. In fact, Artificial Intelligence, the monarch of technology which is ruling the present professional world has all set to spread its wings in the education world as well. So wonderfully it is used in the, in their STEAM labs when it comes to creating applications like devising a fire extinguishing sensing unit or a face recognition app, and that too by the students themselves.
With the government trying to bring about inclusivity in the classroom, it has become a big challenge for the schools to comply with the rule and required the deft hands of the teachers to adjust while teaching to the diverse learners. Initially it seemed a monstrous job. Sometimes it could be a dyslexic child or a child suffering from partial blindness- though the differences being varied, the urge to learn made the facilitator hunt for precise tools to help the special ones. With applications like Office lens and Immersive Reader, the challenges in the classroom teaching and learning could now easily be mitigated.
In India we say, “Vasudhav Kutumbakam!”; which means this world is a family and true to every word, technological advancements have broken the so-called geographic barriers to learning. Blended learning program which combine face to face interaction and online learning like teaching through Skype or a flipped classroom teaching pattern has somewhat taken a step towards substituting a normal classroom scene. Apart from being a low-cost learning program, it gives the necessary leverage to the students to access to online learning at their own sweet time.
Umpteen tools are there for bringing in that BIG CHANGE! in your institution and transform them into INNOVATION STUDIOS. Though the bricks and mortars of the schools i.e. teachers would always be there to assist and implement, the revolution can come only with the welcome change in our thinking and adoption.
